Routine childhood vaccinations are a simple, safe and effective way of protecting children against harmful childhood diseases. Providing the child and parents are well and not displaying symptoms of coronavirus or other infections, children should have routine childhood immunisations as normal. The practice are taking the appropriate measures to minimise the risks by reducing people coming into the surgery. Please book an appointment if notified. It's important that vaccines are given on time for the best protection, but if you or your child miss a vaccine, contact your GP to catch up.
Newport Surgery, in partnership with other GP Surgeries in North Uttlesford, Uttlesford Health Ltd and West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group, is currently undertaking a trial of using an Emergency Care Practitioner to carry out some carefully selected home visits.
Emergency Care Practitioners (ECP) are experienced Registered Paramedics who have undergone additional training in clinical assessment and emergency medicine. Their role is to assess suitable patients and either arrange treatment in conjunction with the patient's GP, to coordinate care from other health professionals, or to arrange for further assessment and treatment elsewhere (for example, in Accident and Emergency).
Using an ECP means patients can be seen earlier (most GP home visits take place after morning surgery) and can receive appropriate care sooner, particularly if the patient needs further tests or a hospital visit. Most GP home visits take up the same time as seeing four to six patients in surgery, and this means that the GP's time can be used where it is most beneficial for patients.
To provide quality care we operate a number of recall systems. Invitations are regularly sent out if you are taking medication that requires monitoring.
We follow national guidelines in the monitoring of chronic diseases. Most of this is done by our practice nurses under the direction of the doctors. You may receive a telephone call or letter asking you to make an appointment.
Annual monitoring of blood pressure and lifestyle advice is available for all patients over 16 years from our practice nurses.
An influenza vaccination is particularly recommended for patients with heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes and residents of nursing and rest homes. Please contact the reception staff in September/October for details of the vaccination dates and to make an appointment.
Patients over the age of 16 years can now access a care navigation service. This free service is delivered in partnership by Community Agents Essex, Age UK Essex and the Provide Essex Lifestyle Service. If you are struggling with a non-clinical issue and it is impacting on your health and wellbeing - you can self refer to the service.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible after receiving the required vaccinations for your trip from the nurse - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment may be required with the practice nurse to complete a course. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
